The Word

The Beginning John 1:1,2
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.

But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. John 20:31

The Gospel of John seems to be the simplest of all books in the Bible to understand. That is why we urge new Believers to begin their study of God’s word in this very Gospel. But at the same time, it is the most profound book in the Bible. Scholars have spent many years investigating its terms and their implications. The apostle John, the author, paints a comprehensive picture of the Lord Jesus Christ-majestic In His humanity yet simply presented in His deity. And so, this gospel communicates perhaps the most profound truths about Jesus Christ found anywhere in Scripture. John not only recalls as an eyewitness the events in Christ Life, he also interprets the meaning behind the miracles. When Jesus presents himself as God, the Jews react in a violent confrontation, leading to Jesus’ crucifixion. This gospel tells of the impact this controversy had on the disciples, and in a broader sense, the implications for us today. The ultimate purpose is that readers will believe the life and death of the Son of God and receive eternal life.

The message of the book is underlined by the use of two key words, believe used 98 times, and life used 36 times. It is summed up by the the verse we read earlier, John 20:31.

John 1:1,2 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.

His Deity- Webster dictionary defines deity as the rank or essential nature of a god. Here John introduces Christ as the Word by emphasizing His Deity. John uses a similar parallel as we see in the first chapters of
Genesis 1:1 - In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth..

This beginning speaks not of the Jesus as the incarnate Christ, which lived as a man as we see later described in verse 14 which we will tackle another day. John is speaking of the first born BEFORE all creation.

Colossians 1:15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.

When we talk about the creation of the world, to us this is the beginning of all time, John is reaching back far before that, he is reaching into eternity. Creation is not mentioned here in this Gospel until verse 3, so the first two verse speak of earlier period.
When all things began, the Word already was…………………….wow!

The Word- The Word is Christ. The literal translation in the Greek is theos en ho logos. This is declaration simply put ‘the Word was God, declaring the deity of the Word. This is where the Jehovah Witness mistranslates in the New World Translation as “the word was a god” which fits very well with their denial of Christ’s deity.
John is making it clear here that this Word or all infinite wisdom is born of the second person is the Trinity, the firstborn over creation…….Jesus, the Son of God, the Messiah. This infinite Author of all wisdom, which we call the Word is both the life and light of all mankind, and today, by believing in Him, you may become a child of God. By trusting in Him, grace and truth is imparted to you. Do you know Him….?


Beginnings- vs 2 Christ is the author of beginnings, author of our Word. This was the confusing fact that the Jews had with him, they thought he was the incarnate of Abraham. But Christ makes them understand in

John 8:58 "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!"

And Christ is the Author of all of your beginnings, new beginnings. Do you realize that we are given new beginnings daily through new mercies
Lamentations 3:23,24 Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed,for his compassion's never fail. They are new every morning;great is your faithfulness, and what about your salvation?

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come

Here in the letter to the Corinthians, Paul says that when we surrender our lives to Christ we embody a new creation. Don’t miss this….He transforms us, we become new.
Do you know Christ? or if you do are you still walking in your old cloths? he has set you free from those rags you where, he has granted you new robe. A robe of Ambassador, heir and considered worthy by the King. Why do you still walk around in defeat, for Christ went to the cross to set you free, to walk in abundant grace. Have you surrendered to it………………today is the day. Because we will later discuss that this Word, it became flesh, and it was Jesus. Do you know why the Word (author of infinite wisdom) became flesh? Because our sin had created a gulf between you and God…..and the only way to build a bridge between that gulf their had to be a attainment, Christ was the perfect attainment. So my wrath and your wrath was poured on The Word that day at Golgotha so you could have a new beginning. Have you surrendered your life to the Author of Life, do you believe in Christ. Do you have life???????
